Sighting Details

What did the UFO look like, shape/size in relation to terrestrial objects/lights/colour :

I was looking out of the window of a passenger aircraft which I think was flying at around 40,000 feet, at over 400 mph, and over northern France at the time. At around 13.00, European time, on a flight from Spain to Scotland. I was sitting above the starboard side wing. We were above large cumulous type cloud formations, with no ground in sight at that time and visibility was perfect. I saw what I initially thought was a large hot air balloon above the clouds and I recall thinking what a beautiful sight it was. I then realised that it was not a balloon but a horeshoe shaped, cylindrical, silvery, shimmering metallic looking structure. At the time I wasn't sure as to it's size as I had nothing to compare it against. It looked as if it was just suspended in space. The open part of the horseshoe shape pointing downwards. The object definately looked manufactured as opposed to anything in nature.

Did the UFO do any strange things like hover and then zoom off quickly :

After about 1 minute or so, it's really hard to say, the object started to change from the horseshoe into a straight horizontal cylindrical shape and it also changed colour whilst doing so, turning black or at least very dark. Again, it looked as if the object was just suspended in space, horizontally now, as opposed to the original vertical position. After a short time the aircraft's wing covered my view of the long horizontal object and I spent some time looking backwards through the window but didn't see the object again.

Shortly after the incident I had a better idea as to it's size when another passenger aircraft came into view at approximately the same distance in relation to the aircraft I was on as the ufo had been. I can say now that the ufo must have been absolutely huge, as the other aircraft, though moving very fast, looked just like a little kids toy. The horseshoe shaped ufo I saw was probably 100 times the size of the aircraft which came into view. When it changed into the black horizontal shape the length of the structure must have been phenomenal. Thousands of feet perhaps. As I was watching the ufo I remember thinking how I wished I'd had a camera with me to take a pic. I also thought about whether I should alert the people near me as to what I was seeing but just couldn't do it for some reason. I spent a lot of time after the event trying to convince myself as to whether I had actually seen what I know I did see. Whilst watching the ufo I felt very calm and at peace, not shocked, nor even surprised. I was not drinking any alcohol on the plane during the flight nor before. I was very surprised also that I never heard any reference from anyone on the plane as regards anyone else having witnessed this event. After the incident I spent a lot of time looking out of the window, moving my head in different directions etc. to see if I could make out any optical illusions, spectrums etc. that could have been caused by the glass, clouds, reflections from the wing etc. and perhaps account for what I witnessed but there was absolutely nothing that could possibly account for it.
