a large purple disc with pink flashing lights- very unlikely airplane!

Did the UFO do any strange things like hover and then zoom off quickly :

Not really, just kept zooming round and round the same areas

i was young-it was 10 years ago! I can only validly remeber the sighting so its not very acurate. And the area i saw it in has changed!
